Is international recruitment right for my business?

International hiring fails when employers treat it as a channel bolt-on. It works when leadership accepts longer timelines, higher fixed costs, and ongoing compliance.

Use this checklist before you apply for a sponsor licence or open global ads.

This is general information for employers, not legal or immigration advice. Rules, fees, and thresholds change — confirm the current position on official government sites before you act.

Readiness checklist

  • Role clarity: You can describe the job, SOC/occupation fit, location, and salary in writing.

  • Budget: You can fund licence, CoS, ISC, visa-related costs, and likely counsel — not only salary.

  • Owner: Someone owns SMS / sponsor duties, not “everyone in HR vaguely”.

  • Timeline: The business can wait weeks or months for licence + visa if sponsoring.

  • Plan B: You know whether remote, EOR, contractor, or domestic hire is acceptable if sponsorship stalls.

Red flags to pause

No budget owner, salary below likely thresholds, no one willing to manage compliance, or a need to hire “next week” onshore without an existing licence.

Common questions

We are a small employer — is this only for large companies?+

No. Small sponsors can and do hold UK licences. The bar is process discipline and eligible roles, not headcount alone. Small-sponsor fee rates often apply.
