Questions to ask before applying for a remote international job

Applying for international remote jobs can take hours.

Before tailoring your CV, writing a cover letter, or preparing for interviews, check whether you are actually eligible.

These questions can help you avoid wasting time on roles that are remote but not open to your location or immigration situation.

01

Guide section

Location and work authorization

Ask whether the role is open to candidates based outside the company’s main country, whether remote means global, regional, or country-specific, and whether applicants need existing work authorization.

If the company cannot hire in your country, the rest of the application may not matter.

02

Guide section

Sponsorship and relocation

Ask whether visa sponsorship is available for this specific role, whether it would be available from the start, and whether relocation support exists.

Do not ask only whether the company sponsors in general. Sponsorship can vary by role, seniority, salary, timing, and country.

03

Guide section

Contract type and hiring setup

Ask whether the role is employment, contractor work, or through an Employer of Record, and whether the company can employ or contract with someone in your country.

Contractor roles can be useful, but they usually do not provide visa sponsorship and may have different tax, benefits, and job-security implications.
